Jemima Stehli and Lewis Amar

Grayson Perry remarked in The Times The finalists include Jemima Stehli, the artist whose work has shown in the very proper Lisson Gallery. Indeed, Jemima became famous through her 1999 Strip series in 1999, when she invited prominent figures from the London art world - critics, curators and dealers - to watch her strip naked whilst they kept hold of the camera’s release cable and select their pwn moment to take the pictures. The resulting photographs show the artist from behind in varying states of undress, with her collaborators with varying expressions of embarrassment, interest or gleefulness, which grabbed the attention from her nakedness.

The works in our Erotic Awards show evolved from this Strip series. Jemima and Lewis Amar expanded on her unique method of photography of the female nude. Amazonian Jemima and her partner display themselves both as subjects and objects playing with the idea of who operates the cable release. This objectivity and subjectivity changes the normal erotic photography process.
