The Pleasure Project

Run by Anne Philpott, this international project has taken the initiative to promote pleasurable safer sex and encourage sexual health. It has long been known that HIV/AIDS figures will never begin to drop until people around the world improve their sexual behaviour, but before this project began, nobody had had the guts to do anything about it. Highly commendable.

Background

The conventional line: safer sex is a necessary evil - protect yourself or face the consequences - not a positive or sexy message. The Pleasure Project avoids negativity, promoting safer sex by focusing on the prime motivators for actually having sex: desire and pleasure. Our message is unique in the world of sexual education; it is positive, exciting, liberating and sexy.

It is an approach that's revolutionary but not surprising. The evidence suggests that positive incentives provide the most effective way to get people to consider changing their habits. The Pleasure Project focuses on these positive elements.

Currently, the safer sex and HIV "industry" avoids discussion of sexual desire and pleasure, while the pleasure industry avoids discussion of safer sex. Few erotic films, magazines and books feature condom use and non-penetrative pleasurable sex as a norm.

We build bridges between the pleasure/sex industry and the safer sex world. We promote erotica and porn that depicts safer sex. We help develop sexual health and training materials that feature pleasure as a key element.

We want to promote change. We want to provide sex education with the emphasis on 'sex', not 'education'. Sex is exciting, fun, and empowering.

Our message should be too. In short, we are Pleasure Propagandists.
